KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - We will see another partly cloudy and cool night tonight, with lows in the lower 50s. A light northeast wind will be in place and the wind may become calm toward daybreak. This may allow for the development of patchy fog; especially along waterways.

MONDAY: Sunshine will dominate our skies with a few fair weather cumulus clouds. These clouds will be mainly over the higher terrain areas. Temperatures will be a few degrees warmer as wind shift back to the southwest at around 5 to 10 mph. Humidity will be just a little higher, but you probably will not even notice it as our dewpoint temperatures, a representation of humidity. We will only rise into the lower 50s. Our high temperatures will top out in the upper 70s to around 80 degrees.

TUESDAY: Skies will remain mostly sunny despite a gradual increase in moisture across the region. The higher moisture content may allow for the formation of isolated showers and a couple thunderstorms during the afternoon hours, on the higher terrain, including the Cumberland Plateau and Appalachian mountains. Most of the Tennessee Valley will remain dry. Highs will reach the lower 80s, and you will notice the higher humidity during the afternoon.

WEDNESDAY: The southerly flow will continue to pull moist air into the region from the Gulf. This higher humidity will lead to the development of a few more showers and thunderstorms, mainly during the afternoon hours over the Cumberland Plateau and Appalachians where the orographic enhancement of atmospheric lift will help their formation. Once again, much of the valley should remain dry. Skies will be partly sunny in the increasingly moist environment, but high temperatures will be even warmer, topping out in the mid 80s, as southwest winds continue around 5 to 10 mph.

LATE WORK WEEK: Thursday will be a more active day in terms of thunderstorm development. The main system driving our more active weather is an upper level trough that will move steadily east across the viewing area Thursday into Friday. This system will be associated with two main lifting mechanisms. The first feature, a pre-frontal trough will build into the area later Thursday afternoon into Thursday night generating a band of showers and thunderstorms that should impact most of the viewing area with convective rainfall. The final part of the storm system will build into the area on Friday in the form of a cold front

However, the chance for a more widespread pattern of showers and thunderstorms will increase later Thursday into Friday, as another frontal system builds east into the Tennessee Valley and southern Appalachians. The good news is that it appears our weekend will be dry with sunshine returning behind our late, work week storm system!

Until this late week system passes, warm and humid weather will be hanging around, with highs in the lower to middle 80s and lows in the lower 60s, both Wednesday and Thursday.

The weekend will be much more pleasant with lower humidity and highs in the mid 70s and lows in the lower 50s, which is just about average for early May in our area.
