Dal Lake, or "the jewel of Srinagar", is a beautiful recreational lake in the city of Srinagar in Kashmir. The lake is home to brightly painted houseboats and floating markets, making it one of the most iconic sights in the city. Tourists come to enjoy cruising on the lovely Shikaras boats and taking in stunning views of the water.
The beauty of Kashmir valley starts and ends here. The clear reflections of Himalayas are the main highlights. Its a never ending joy when you are in Kashmir. You never get bored and wont feel repetitive if you go to banks of this lake.. The Shikkara ride is so nice experience. By shikkara ride you can enjoy the hidden beauties of this lake. The floating markets, shops, food stalls, morning vegitable markets etc to be experienced by having shikkara rides. Its really amazing that around lakhs of people are living and finding their daily income through this lake only. The house boats stay is other thing you should not miss when you are in Srinagar. You can find a lot of house boats here. While choosing stay in Houseboat keep in mind that near to Gate 1-5 you can have so many hotels, taxi facilities are nearby. If you go to little more further beyond gate no. 10, the natural beauty is so amazing.. But the facilities will be less..so you should plan accordingly.

If you are travelling to Srinagar, riding on Shikara in Dal lake is must activity. It is a complete city living on water.People started preparations for Winter. "Winter is coming". Wow we experienced that. There are farming lands, shops, ATM's, different vendors selling many things around. We visited Dal Lake in Oct-22. Experienced fall season(autumn) and there was a snow fall 2/3 days before. We stayed there in HB Richards Green. Bang opposite to Gate No 5. Stay and food was good.

The floating gardens, vibrant with colorful flowers, are a testament to the region's unique culture and resourcefulness. The local cuisine, enjoyed at waterfront cafes, adds a delightful culinary experience to your visit.Dal Lake is not just a destination; it’s an experience that lingers in the heart long after you’ve left. When in Srinagar, I got to experience the soothing Shikara Ride at Dal Lake. This hillside lake is home to the wonderfully carved wooden houseboats and colorful Shikaras (the small wooden carved boats) casually commuting through the scenic peaks of the Pir Panjal Mountains. It is spread across 22 square kilometers and its beauty kept growing as my Shikarawala rowed my Shikara deeper and deeper into its placid water flow!Shikaras are extensively used to commute back and forth from the houseboats, for daily traveling, or for boating tours. They are very well maintained, beautifully decorated, and rowed by professionals who are well aware of the different aspects of Dal Lake, which makes the Shikara Rides even more exciting and interesting. Staying rooted in their old charm, the swift movement of a Shikara provided me with a unique way to experience the eternal beauty of Kashmir, and must say, they certainly add to the beauty of Dal Lake with their colorful presence! The duration of the Shikara Ride at Dal Lake in Kashmir ranges from 1 hour to 4 hours, the Shikarawalas at one of the ghats surrounding the lake guided me regarding the same which helped me in choosing the ride as per my convenience. However, the pricing here is dynamic so the better your bargaining skills, the better chances of you bagging a worthy deal!It was an experience of a lifetime for me as I got wooed by scenic vistas of the Zabarwan Range and the deepness of the calming Dal Lake. The vibrations in the water formed by the rowing of Shikarawala were an equally visual treat. The mesmerizing scene of surrounding snowy mountains looked even more beautiful at the sunset which reflected in the gleaming water of the lake. The Shikara ride is incomplete without stopping at Meena Bazaar, a lively lake market. This market has a number of shops selling all sorts of goods including Kashmir’s specialties such as wooden artifacts, handmade earrings, carpets, Kashmiri handicrafts, saffron, and even Kashmiri Pashmina shawls right in the middle of the lake. However, it is advisable to avoid shopping here as the rates are on the higher side and the authenticity of goods sold is doubtful.Dal Lake is nothing short of heaven for film shootings and photography enthusiasts. May it be its floating gardens or the lush green spread around and the rocky terrains, it has various sights to offer for you to get those perfect shots! Besides this, I also got to see various birds while enjoying my ride which was indeed a cheerful sight.A Shikara ride is the best way to enjoy a picturesque ride across the lake, especially because these wooden boats with pointed ends on both sides and with beautiful canopies overhead are a cultural symbol and can only be seen in Srinagar.Must say, this ride helped me build memories of a lifetime, and was worth every penny. Spending a day in the calm waters of Dal Lake was one of the most relaxing aspects of my Kashmir Trip. It was hard to bid farewell to this delightful ride which made me fall in love with every nook and corner of the iconic Dal Lake against the backdrop of the snow-covered mountains but I’m definitely carrying a smile on my face, calmness of mind, the coolness of emotions and a heart filled with gratitude with me!

A must visit spot if you are in Srinagar. Known for house boat stay, it has a lot more to offer. Calm, serene Lake water with regular boats (shikara) ferrying people. We were personally amazed Floating market, how they have everything available on water. From grocery to clothing, you hope on to shikara and buy what you need. Locals were very welcoming and no unnecessary push to sell their stuff.

Beautiful lake, amazing view, great night view, and excellent climate. The shikara ride was completely worth through the floating market. Loved every minute of it.But we got a really, really bad stay, was unfortunate but still enjoyed the stay because of the lake love. The boat we stayed on was Athena. It was great, spacious, good food. Until we really started having trouble. It was full of dust. Heavy dust that we immediately started sneezing and caught cold. Then I was happy that the food was good and then during breakfast, before checkout we got an omelette with cockroach in it !! I mean, why !!! The boat was never getting cleaned. That we knew.

"Dal Lake", Truly an unforgettable experience. No wonder it's called the jewel of Kashmir.I visited in July 2023 and could go for a shikara ride around sunset time. Ride itself was soothing with spectacular sunset views and we could even manage a very closer view of the water fountain show which was going on.I personally have considered "Dal Lake " to be a hyped-up lake with an opportunity for a good ride around but honestly, it's much more than just a large lake with shikara rides. There is much commercial activity going along like houseboat stays, water plant harvesting, fishing, floating markets and more. During extreme winter months, entire lake will be frozen but then it's the time for winter sports and related activities. It's just like a lifeline for many people. It's really a large lake complete with 3 tiny islands and some landmarks, and the most commendable part is its Idyllic setting. It's covered in most sides by majestic mountains, and I can only imagine the spectacular views it has to offer during winter months when there is snow around. So instead of the regular "Must Visit Tag ", I will recommend it with a "MUST MULTIPLE VISIT LOCATION " so that you can enjoy its beauty completely.

Dal lake is one of the best places to visit if you are in Kashmir. We stayed at the house boat. One of the best experiences. Sikara Ride was very much enjoyable. But people are throwing a lot of plastics in the lake. It shouldn’t be. The water of the lake is green as water can't pass by. And make sure the room heaters if you want to stay at the house boat. Dal Lake, located in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, is often referred to as the "Jewel in the crown of Kashmir." It's renowned for its serene waters, picturesque landscapes, and traditional houseboats. The best time to visit is during spring (March to May) when the weather is pleasant, and the gardens around the lake are in full bloom. Summer (June to August) is also ideal for comfortable temperatures, perfect for boat rides and sightseeing. Autumn (September to November) offers beautiful scenery with crisp air and changing leaves, though it can be chilly. Winter (December to February) provides a magical snowy landscape, but it can be quite cold, and some boat services might be limited.During your visit, taking a Shikara ride is a must. It's a great way to experience the lake's beauty and see the floating gardens. Staying in one of Dal Lake's houseboats can offer a unique experience, with many equipped with modern amenities for a comfortable stay. Exploring the local markets around the lake is a great opportunity to shop for souvenirs like Kashmiri shawls, carpets, and handicrafts. It's also important to dress modestly and respect local customs. When visiting, ensure you do not litter or pollute the lake, as maintaining cleanliness is crucial. In winter, be cautious of slippery paths and limited accessibility, and make sure you're prepared for cold weather. Avoid aggressive bargaining in local markets; fair trade supports local artisans and vendors. Also, be mindful of your personal belongings and avoid venturing out alone late at night.Dal Lake offers a picturesque destination with a rich cultural backdrop, and by following these guidelines, you can ensure a pleasant and memorable visit.

Timeless Dal Lake!! But actually I saw it in 1981 and then again now in 2024 ... Guess what, the areas near the boulevard are quiet dirty now. To experience the pristine side of Dal lake go to the other side which is full of lotus ponds and lily pads. I took a shikara from Nishat garden and came to Ghat no. 13. Do something similar and you will get to see the less touristy, more pristine, more rural and natural side of the lake with its original inhabitants of the many birds too. Btw, doing this kind of a trip will cost you about 4-5k Rs. But be prepared to bargain hard. They first asked for 9k from me which we settled for 3k!!

I visited Dal Lake on July 13, 2024, and stayed for two days in two different houseboats. The experience was both enchanting and eye-opening. there are a few things you should consider.**Stay on a Houseboat:**If you visit Dal Lake, staying at least one night on a houseboat is a must. The experience is unlike any other, offering a blend of traditional Kashmiri hospitality and breathtaking views. In the evening, don’t miss out on a shikara ride. Not only is it peaceful, but it also allows you to explore the floating markets on the lake. Shopping from a shikara is a unique and memorable experience, though keep in mind that it can be a bit pricey.**Tips for Houseboat Booking:**When booking a houseboat, it’s better to do so offline rather than online. This allows you to bargain, which can get you a much better deal—sometimes cheaper than a hotel stay. If possible, choose the last room on the houseboat; these rooms tend to be more spacious and offer better views.**Environmental Concerns:**However, it’s important to note that the beauty of Dal Lake is marred by some environmental issues. Unfortunately, some houseboat owners contribute to the pollution by directly discharging waste into the lake. Additionally, littering by both locals and tourists has led to certain areas of the lake becoming quite dirty. This neglect by houseboat operators and visitors is a serious issue that affects the lake's ecosystem and overall appeal.**Final Thoughts:**Dal Lake remains a stunning and culturally rich destination, but being mindful of its environmental challenges is crucial. By making responsible choices and encouraging sustainable practices, visitors can help preserve this jewel of Kashmir for future generations.

An amazing place for relaxing Shikara ride as well as just for a stroll on adjoining road. Consider going there during day (afternoon/evening) as well as night time, as it had very different vibe and view to offer. And yes, do not miss out on buying some souvenirs from the road-side market that they set up during evening hours.

Dal Lake unfortunately suffers from poor water quality. The experience is marred by excessive negotiation for shikara rides and persistent hawkers that block the scenic views. Additionally, the broken and dirty houseboats detract from the overall enjoyment. Not recommended to visit in summer for a relaxing or scenic visit.

Very beautiful lake! You must bargain for boating. They asked us 4500 for 3 person but we bargained to them with 1500 for 3 persons. They will show the famous points of lake and in the middle you can enjoy the food and other things. Must try the Kawa

Nice place. Need to keep clean. We are 9 members group came to during August period. We made rooms in this lake. Pretty good hospitality. Boat ride was so good. The view of mountains from the lake was awesome.... Must visit place in Srinagar J&K. We spent a day here. Hotels light, road side foods all are colorful. Bit busy area....1. Visit during weekdays it will be better.2. Keep your thinks carefully.3. Be safe with your luggages.

Dal Lake is one of the best places in Kashmir✨This place offers calmness and essence of self awareness if done ride correctly. We really enjoyed each and every second being in Lake.House boats, Boat Cafe and Shopping complexes all over the Lake makes it very convenient. The boat rides are quite expensive so please do bargaining at your end. It has different variants which cover 4,6 and 8 points over Dal Lake.Embrace the breeze and attain a peaceful state to enjoy the fullest✨

Everyone knows about it. It's the growing weed in the lake that bothers me. I can't see this water body dying and administration is least bothered about it. We the people have turned sucha blessing into a garbage dump. Yeah you can enjoy the tasty food and hotels on the boulevard

A Shikara ride on Dal Lake in Srinagar is a magical experience you can’t miss! 🌅 Picture this: gliding over crystal-clear waters, with the stunning Himalayas reflecting on the lake, and the soft sound of oars cutting through the water. It’s like floating through a postcard! 🚤✨The views are unreal—floating gardens, colorful houseboats, and the famous Mughal gardens along the shore. As the sun sets, the whole lake glows in shades of pink and orange, creating a dreamy, almost surreal atmosphere. 🌸🌄There’s something incredibly peaceful about it—the slow pace of the Shikara, the cool breeze off the water, and the surrounding beauty of Dal Lake. Whether you’re soaking in the views or just drifting along, it’s an experience that will stay with you long after you leave. Kashmir’s magic at its finest!
